Bloqué derrière son coéquipier, le Britannique demande alors à son ingénieur que l’ordre soit passé à Bottas d’accélérer… ou de le laisser passer. Dans le cas où lui-non plus ne parvient à se défaire de la Ferrari, il promet de rendre sa place à Bottas. Le Finlandais des Gris s’exécute. Mais le triple champion du monde bute à son tour sur le vétéran de la Scuderia. Tenant parole, Lewis Hamilton rend sa place sur le podium à son coéquipier dans les derniers hectomètres de la course. Nombreux étaient ceux à le mettre en garde au soir du Grand Prix de Hongrie. Son geste de grande classe n’allait-il pas lui coûter le titre en fin de sa saison ? Alors que les Ferrari semblaient sur un nuage sur le tracé du Hungaroring, Bottas, troisième dans la deuxième moitié de la course, n’arrivait pas à revenir sur les Rouges. Derrière, Hamilton trépignait d’impatience. Demandant l’autorisation à son stand de doubler son coéquipier, le Britannique a promis de rendre le podium au Finlandais s’il ne parvenait pas à son tour à croquer Räikkönen. Incapable de passer la monoplace de la Scuderia, Hamilton a tenu parole, rétrogradant volontairement en 4e position et laissant échapper quelques points précieux alors que la lutte entre Vettel et lui n’avait jamais semblé si rude.
