Andres Iniesta brought an end to his incredible career at Barcelona on Sunday evening, captaining his side to a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad at the Nou Camp. Iniesta joined the club as a 12-year-old, progressing through the ranks at La Masia before making his debut under Louis van Gaal in 2002. Under Pep Guardiola he made the step up into football's elite, going on to win nine La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues, in addition to two European Championships and a World Cup victory with Spain. With Barcelona in control of the match at 1-0, the midfielder was substituted in the 81st minute, leaving the pitch to a standing ovation and handing the captain's armband to Lionel Messi. Tears in his eyes, the 33-year-old made his way to the bench watched on by former teammate Xavi in the stand, to be congratulated by manager Ernesto Valverde and the rest of the Barca team on the substitutes bench. "My time at Barça ends here because I know how demanding the club is and what it means to be captain of the best team in the world," said Iniesta. "I wanted to be honest with myself and the club. It wasn’t necessary. We understood each other with a look. Look at how he is loved across the world. Soon you will really know and appreciate what you have done for football, my friend, Andres. A goal by Philippe Coutinho won the match for Iniesta's Barcelona, the ex-Liverpool player having been signed as a potential long-term replacement for Barca's talisman. His stunning strike from 25 yards was worthy of winning any game but filling the gap left by Iniesta, one of the greatest players in Spanish football history, is surely impossible.
