Light heavyweight Liam McGeary hit the record books as the first British fighter to claim a major MMA title in North America in 2015, and when he lost the crown to Phil Davis after one defence against Tito Ortiz, the American promised him a rematch. But Davis lost the belt to newly signed Ryan Bader. It scuppered his cunning plan. All McGeary wants is that built back - and a Bader fight now. But he must first come through Russian Vadim Nevkov in Connecticut tonight at Bellator 194. And while Bader is away at the fight league's 8-man heavyweight tournament, potentially for a year, McGeary aims to get himself into polo position. Bellator, though, has made some signings in its 205b division in the last year making it arguably the most competitive top 6 or 7 in the world. "The boys they are signing are top fighters. The fights are getting better, the shows are great. It’s always a spectacle." "Look, Bader has come over, he’s a champion, and we’ve got Phil Davis. I don’t know who else they’ve signed. I’m reading there’s a lot coming in. I dont take too much notice and just focus on myself," said the Jersey fighter. McGeary hasn't fought side. "It’s been a long time. It was May last year. I was supposed to fight in October but broke my thumb two weeks before the fight. That put me out until the new year. I got pissed off and let life catch up with me." The injury ? "I was hitting someone in the head. We’re fighters," laughs McGeary sardonically, before explaining: "We had them super safety gloves on and they don’t have any thumb protection. I should have been wearing boxing gloves. I threw an uppercut and it bounced off awkwardly and my thumb took the brunt of it." "I felt the thing crumble in my hand. I asked them to take my glove off and my thumb just dropped. I thought it was dislocated and had about four people trying to put it back in but it kept coming out. Then my friend had a look at it and said you need pins in that it’s f----d." It required serious surgery. "They put pins in it to help form the bone again. There was one down the centre and four going into the side of it. They took them out after six weeks and then I had to wear something else just to hold the thumb in case it got rocked or anything." #TapoutTuesday - Former light heavyweight champ @liam_mcgeary’s #BJJ game is Liam looks to get back on the road to title contention with a win over Russian powerhouse Vadim Nemkov this Friday, Feb. 16th LIVE & FREE on @paramountnet#Bellator194pic.twitter.com/39qU7s7B9Y— Bellator MMA (@BellatorMMA) February 13, 2018 McGeary was crestfallen not being able to fight, over use his hands in training. "I was pissed. I was angry. How I was looking when it actually happened, it was going to be a cracking fight, trust me. I was going to do a number on this guy. I was annoyed. Ten minutes after having the cast on I booked a ticket and I was off. I was off to a beach. I travelled around all over the place." To raise his spirits, he went travelling, seeking the sun, seeing friends. "I went to Hawaii, LA, New York and then Spain and back to New York and then back to Spain and then back to Hawaii. I didn’t drink. I wanted to get straight back in as soon as my thumb was better. The only thing that would have messed that up is if I went on a drinking binge. I ate healthy and treated myself right. I enjoyed life, man. I turned a blind eye to everything in this sport and I missed my family and friends." So - to the contest at the Mohegan Sun Resort, and the compact, 6ft tall, 25-year-old opponent, record 8-2 - 7 KOs - tonight. "He’s someone in the way of me moving forward and getting my title back. I want to go out there and prove a point and make sure everyone remembers who I am. I’m looking forward to it. I have to beat him everywhere. On the ground, on my feet. Everywhere. I’m going to take his head off." Bader, though, sits in the back of his mind. "Of course I want to fight him. One fight at a time, one person at a time, one knockout at a time. Let’s just enjoy the carnage." Nor is he bothered about Bader being held up in the heavyweight tournament. "That’s all right. I’m not going to get a title fight straight away. He’s tied up in that tournament and that gives me time to fight these other guys. Everyone needs to fight. It kind of works in my favour." McGeary does not think Bader will become a two weight champion, nor indeed, would he put himself forward - as welterweight champion, the Canadian Rory MacDonald - as an alternate in the tournament. "I think Matt Mitrione or Frank Mir look likely finalists, and I think Mitrione might just win it. He’s strong and he’s athletic. It will definitely be an entertaining fight. Me in with the heavies ? I’m lean, man. There are weight divisions for a reason. I’m slower when I’m heavier. I just want to get my light heavyweight belt back."
