Brewers get come-from-behind win in Craig Counsell's first game as manager

What a 24 hours it was for Craig Counsell: He watched Sunday night as the Milwaukee Brewers fired manager Ron Roenicke, then installed him as skipper Monday morning. Counsell's first task on the job? Face the Los Angeles Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw.

Those 24 hours finished in the best possible way too — the game ball in Counsell's hand, his first win as an MLB manager secured when his Brewers scored three runs in the eighth inning for a come-from-behind victory against the best pitcher in baseball.

At one point Monday morning, during his introductory media sessions, Counsell talked about wanting his players to write a new story. He got one, all right. Here's more from Tom Haurdicourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

The Brewers were down 3-0 in the sixth, with Kershaw cruising, so it looked like a storybook ending wasn't meant to be. But they got a run in the sixth when Gerardo Parra tripled home Hector Gomez.

In the eighth, with Kershaw still on the hill, Gomez homered and Adam Lind followed with a double. That chased the Dodgers ace, but Carlos Gomez came up next and doubled home Lind to tie the game. Two batters later, Gomez scored on a very close infield single by Ryan Braun that held up on review.

Braun, who was hitting .229 coming into the game, told reporters he could definitely see a difference in his club:

"You could see it, you could feel it, you could sense it — it was a special energy tonight," said Ryan Braun, who drove in the winning run in the eighth when he beat out a broken-bat grounder to third. "It was weird at the end of the game. It was an atmosphere we haven't been a part of for a long time.

"Obviously, it was special for us to get (Counsell) his first victory. For us to come back and win a game against the best pitcher on the planet, when he was on top of his game and throwing the ball well, is special. Hopefully, it's a sign of things to come."

That's the type of re-write Counsell and the Brewers front office is hoping for.
