Another baseball finds a beer cup, another fan chugs away

How's this for an oddity that could only happen in baseball?

In one calendar day, we witnessed two instances of a baseball landing in a loaded beer cup at a major league ballpark, and on both occasions the fan ended up chugging down what remained of their beer without removing the baseball.

We already reported on the Cubs' fan who actually caught Yonder Alonso's foul ball in her cup on the fly from her upper deck seat at Wrigley Field. Just hours later at AT&T Park in San Francisco, a Giants' fans had similar luck — or misfortune, depending on how much you value your beer — although the circumstances leading up were entirely different.

In this instance, the baseball ending up in the beer cup was totally unplanned. A mistake even. The baseball was fouled off into the third base camera well near the Giants dugout. One of its occupants — perhaps a photographer, possibly a security guard, maybe even a Giants clubhouse attendant — picked out a fan behind the dugout and tossed the ball.

What followed was some volleyball action as the baseball deflected off the hands of a young fan presumed to be the target and directly into this gentlemen's adult beverage.

Unbelieveable, right?

Earlier in the day, we didn't think a fan could catch a foul ball in a beer cup twice in 200 times if they were trying. How many times would it take to do it twice when you weren't trying?

Actually, probably better, because that's just how life at the ballpark works.

Here though, the fan did make an attempt to remove the baseball before finishing off the beer. The beer gods just didn't cooperate, so we ended up with this.

If you've never caught a foul ball or home run at the ballpark, perhaps keeping a beer handy is the way to go. It might be akin to buying a lottery ticket — only more expensive — but instead of waiting for numbers, you just hold it up and wait for the ball.

Or possbly the chicken finger if the seagulls arrive early.
